Ban Ma RV & Park: The camp has been set up, and it’s time to take care of some remote work.

Slowly heading for Qingdao, we found a camping place in Yantai. Recommended from various forums and the internet. The name is Ban Ma RV & Park, and checked in with ease. The spot for our caravan and car was entirely in the bushes, which is expected here, as DIY travels are not so every day. They had electricity/water available, so for one night, it was ok. We are in a little hurry as we will meet some friends in Inner Mongolia and need to keep some schedule so as not to be so much sightseeing on the way. We were not anticipating disaster on the 2nd night of camping as we were travelling.

Early morning wake-up call: Disaster on the 2nd night of camping

A man seen through a rain-speckled window, crouching under a partially collapsed blue mosquito tent during heavy rain in China, highlighting the challenges of outdoor adventures in unpredictable weather
Early morning wake-up at 6 AM, heaven poured rain like never before. Our awning and mosquito tent had collapsed. I rushed out to save some of the shoes and other stuff, but they mainly had soaked already. To be too confident about the weather might hit you when sudden changes. One hint is also to have some weights on the awning legs in the windy area. Luckily, only our shoes and some clothes got wet, + I was like swimming with clothes on. Lessons learned: check the forecast.

The campground is located at West Coast Ecological Park (青岛西海岸生态观光园)

Qingdao West Coast Ecological Sightseeing Park is located at No. 3666, Jiaozhou Bay East Road, Huangdao District, Qingdao City. It is the first phase of the Lingshan Bay Scenic Area, covering an area of 1,500 acres. It is affiliated with Qingdao West Coast Modern Agriculture Development Co., Ltd. (a wholly-owned subsidiary of Qingdao West Coast Development Group ), construction started in March 2015 and trial operations on April 9, 2016.
The park’s natural environment and geographical location are superior, with Oriental Film City to the east, Lianghe Road to the west, Binhai Avenue to the south, and Xiaozhu Mountains to the north. The main attractions include rapeseed flower sea (flowering period from early April to early May), lavender flower field (flowering period from June to October), volcanic rock barbecue area, yurt camping site, RV camping site, fantasy rafting (open in July), and colourful flower slopes, Dream Palace, Plant Science Garden, Brick Kiln Theme Bar, Children’s Paradise, Performing Arts Plaza (not yet open) and West Coast Equestrian Club.

Not so much for the kids when travelling off-season

This was a prominent place with yurts and fixed caravans and not so much for kids in the camping place. Outside, instead, there was a park with the longest slide I had ever seen. Unfortunately, it was not open during our visit.

We spent the night at Ban Ma RV & Park, only to be met in the morning by intense thunderstorms, heavy winds, and an unexpected wake-up call as our awning broke, leaving us soaked.

Summary

Big camping area with caravans and yurt tents for rental. The DIY space surprisingly had electricity and water. One meter long grass surrounding the concrete slab. I don't think many DIY campers have been here

Pros

  • The flowers are overwhelmingly surrounding you
  • Water/electricity available
  • Public toilets
  • Friendly staff
  • You can have long walks in the area
  • Loooong water slide
  • Short distance, 30 min drive from one of the most famous beaches in China

Cons

  • Not so many activities inside the camping area for kids off-season
  • Could not find any shops
  • No public shower
  • No sewage emptying point
  • The water slide was closed and also other external activities were. This was in July and should be tourist season
