This is one of the trips I have been waiting for.

Driving to Xi’an with RV and seeing the traffic during peak time on the highways. Preparations were done as before for the RV road trip but with additional thoughts about getting stuck on the highway for some days. I have seen the news on Chinese social media that you can sit in your car for a very long period, especially if the weather changes, such as snowing and icy with a big accident. Decided to buy 200 packs of instant noodles/cups/chopsticks/water if so happens and was prepared to share if needed.

For any issues on the road. Engine oil, air compressor, hand tools, tire repair kit, first aid kit, water, and a lot of instant noodles.

This was not a traditional trip but more or less a family reunion

The most important festival in China is the spring festival or Chinese New Year with family gatherings. As usual, the highways are great to drive and this time almost empty as we left Shanghai very late, on the 27th of January. I think most people are already at home celebrating the new year. The reason for this was our kid’s school (international) as they follow different holiday schedules than local schools. Very nice to drive on empty roads. I have never seen the highways so empty in China. In some parts, we could drive for several km without seeing any other vehicles. After some hundreds of km, we decided to boondock at the service station to have some rest. I’m always the driver and my wife takes care of the navigation.

Boondocking at Sinopec Yingshang Yingfeng Gas Stn. When needed to stay safe and be able to buy something, boondocking at a service station is a safe bet. And you can see also our big guard dog watching over us.

The countryside of Xian

When getting closer to the village we met some unexpected problems. Hight limit of the RV is 3.25m! We could not find the way to the village without a height limit that would be over 3.25m and needed to call for help from family. Luckily they had a friend who was a truck driver and he routed our path to finally reach the village without losing the roof of the RV. These high limits might come suddenly and if not paid attention they will get expensive.

Finland farmer seen in Xian. Needed to get some vegetables for my wife’s noodle soup.

Some of the big family gathered in front of the RV. The interest from the locals in this moving home was quite big and many persons checked out the inside of the RV.

Some short videos from our trip

Parked the RV a little bit here and there as we could not find any suitable campgrounds.

No campgrounds or any other RV-specific parking places are available. We stay in the village by the house, busy street in Xian, sandy parking in front of small shops and parking at the sightseeing spot.

This Is always working in China. You can order food or groceries or whatever and wherever you are and it is very fast. Here we had some breakfast ordered and it came within 15 minutes to the parking lot at Millenium City Park in Kaifeng.

Dragon Pavilion, or Long Ting (龙亭) Fun Day

Site of the former imperial palace, this park is mostly gardens and a lake, into which hardy swimmers plunge in winter. Reached by a bridge, you can climb the namesake Dragon Pavilion (龙亭, Lóng Tíng) for a sense of the former palace’s grandeur.

This is a AAAA national scenic spot known for its rich historical relic and beautiful natural landscape worth a visit in Kaifeng City, Henan Province.

As one of six famous ancient imperial cities of China, Kaifeng reached its heyday as the capital of the prosperous Northern Song Dynasty (960-1279) for 167 years in ancient China. When the power of the subsequent Yuan Dynasty (1279-1368) invaded the city, most of the palaces of the Northern Song Dynasty were burnt down, and the levee failure of the Yellow River gave rise to more destruction, which made the majestic imperial constructions ruins.
