So, if someone living in China, who normally doesn't need to drive, wants to drive, can s/he get a temporary driver's license like the tourists do?

Hi, basically no as the temporary driving license is mainly for tourists and valid only for rental cars.

If you stay longer in China here is the process for driving license.

If you have valid driving license from your home country.

  1. Foreign Driver’s License: Must be valid, translated into Chinese, and notarized.
  2. Visa and Residence Permit: Hold a valid visa or residence permit. Tourist visas can apply for a temporary permit.
  3. Medical Examination: Undergo a medical exam at designated hospitals.
  4. Translation and Notarization: Translate and notarize the license at recognized institutions. Submit all materials to the local vehicle management office.
  5. Submit Documents: Provide passport, visa, license, notarized translation, residence permit, medical certificate, and photos.
  6. Written Test: Pass a written test on Chinese traffic regulations with a score of 90 or above. An English version is usually available.

I hope this helps! If you have any more questions, feel free to ask.
